Ghosts and Shadow Men

In winter of 2012 my sister's best friend had another one of her many encounters with the paranormal while at her home in northern Johnson County KS. From what I've gathered her home possesses some very strange energy and has played host to many odd events over the years. Phantom footsteps and other anomalous noises, electronics turning off and on by themselves, inexplicably misplaced objects and an all around creepy vibe...you know, all the classic hallmarks of a haunted house. I'd blog more about her experiences but it's hard to snag an interview. The following is discerned from notes I had my sister take in my absence.

It was sometime after midnight and Katie (not her real name) was finally getting ready for bed, a routine that included placing a chair below her doorknob to keep her parents out while she slept. Without fail she would do this every night, same chair, same position. Well, one morning she woke up to find that her chair had been moved and pushed up against another wall. Physically speaking the only one capable of moving that chair would have been Katie herself, and while it is possible she moved it during an episode of sleepwalking (though she doesn't have a history of such), when one considers the history of unexplained phenomena in that home, an act of the supernatural should not be ruled out.

Katie and my sister's notes about the chair.
Katie has also seen several shadow figures in her home. There was a night where she came face to face with one of these entities in the hall right outside her bedroom, which her cat also appeared to notice and began following around. The thing dissipated when it reached the end of the hall but soon after there came a knocking at the door and wouldn't you know it, no one was there.

On another occasion Katie got up somewhere between the hours of two and three in the morning for a late night snack. Her house, like many others, has certain lights that are kept on overnight and one of those lights was at the bottom of the basement stairs, the top of which you pass on your way to the kitchen. The cats often hang out around here since their litter box is kept at the bottom of said staircase. Tonight was no exception. Seeing the kitties, Katie decided to stop and pet them before continuing on. However, when she looked up from the cats, instead of just seeing the staircase she saw something... more. Or, should I say someone more. At the bottom of the basement stairs there now stood a man. A shadowy, flat figure of a man with long, stringy hair wearing a trench coat. He was only visible for a moment, stepping into and then out of the light at the basement landing, just long enough for the friend to pick up a sense of consciousness from the being. Whatever it was, it seemed to be aware of its surroundings. Katie, also being aware of her surroundings, decided to skip the kitchen and just go back to bed.

I’ve always wanted to visit Katie’s house, but the timing has never worked out. Everyone I know who’s been inside though says the place radiates negative energy. According to Katie there has been one known death in the house, that of an old woman, but this obviously doesn’t seem to match up with encounters of shadow people and more masculine entities like the one in the last story. Shadow people in particular have so many theories surrounding them, everything from being interdimensional beings or demons to even having ties to the Men in Black (themselves extremely unknown). Just do a search for shadow people on mysteriousuniverse.org and you’ll see what I mean. The only thing I can say for sure is that something strange is definitely up in that house.
